The With and For Girls Awards is a global initiative to identify and support strong local organisations working with and for girls. The With and For Girls Collective is a group of eight organisations that share the belief that girls are vital agents of change. The With and For Girls Collective is made up of: EMpower, Mama Cash, Nike Foundation, NoVo Foundation, Plan UK, Stars Foundation, The Global Fund for Children and The Malala Fund.

The charity – based in Hamburg, Germany – is recognised for its work to empower and support lesbian, bi and trans women as well as raising awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) and women’s rights.

JungLesbenZentrum will receive the Award at a London ceremony tonight, where representatives from the winning organisations will attend along with people from a range of foundations, multilateral agencies, INGOs and prominent influencers within the sector.

Prejudices against LGBT women in Germany still exist.

Young LGBT women or those with questions around their sexual identity often face discrimination and feel excluded from society, unable to voice their opinion or speak up.

JungLesbenZentrum works to empower girls by providing a safe space for them to explore their identity, seek advice and strengthen their self-confidence.

The organisation offers counselling services and activities for lesbian and bisexual girls and young women up to the age of 25.

A pedagogical team offers support to girls and young women who have questions about their sexual and gender orientation or who feel insecure about these issues.

The organisation runs an open meeting day every week where young lesbians can get together socially and plan activities and special events.

JungLesbenZentrum also raises awareness of LGBT and women’s rights through events and works with established networks to promote the needs of young lesbians in politics and the wider society.

Muna Wehbe, CEO of Stars Foundation – “Despite the critical role that women and girls play in sustainable development, the World Bank estimates that less than two cents of every dollar spent on international aid is directed towards adolescent girls. The With and For Girls Award provides flexible funding to grassroots girl-focused NGOs, empowering them to invest their funds where they need them most. We want to shine a spotlight on these outstanding local organisations and encourage more funders to support girls in their role as vital agents of change within our sector.

As part of the award package, JungLesbenZentrum will receive US$15,000 of flexible funding and capacity building support.
