Martin Blackburn’s Alright Bitches! is a play that tells the story of a generation-gap couple, two friends and a fag hag all embarking on the sunny sights of Gran Canaria.

The generation-gap couple Ollie and Jason, played by Grant Cartwright and Anton Tweedale respectively, have never set foot on the island and prefer to holiday in more elegant locations. However, Ollie, the younger of the couple, would like to, at least once, go on a more low-brow holiday, especially after the rough few months the couple have been through.

In contrast, Gran Canaria veterans Max and Garth, played by Lucas Livesey and Ethan Chapples, have visited the island many times. Garth likes to enjoy the local offerings scattered throughout the Yumbo Centrum and the dunes. Rarely does Garth return home at night and really embraces the sun, sex and sangria mentality. Max, on the other hand, is still waiting for his night of passion. Bored of his monotonous life working in a call centre, he prefers to get away from it all and just chill (the relaxing kind…).

Pam or ‘Fat Pam’ as Max likes to call her, is hilariously played by Hannah Vesty. She wants to get away from men and decides to venture off with the boys. Although she gets entangled with a Spanish lothario, she still acts as the wise old owl of the trip and imparts sage advice to the couple and the old friends.

The play has loose connections to Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer’s Night Dream’ as the boundaries between love and sex become blurred between the pairs. There are lows, there are highs and scarily enough, it’s all too easy to relate to the characters and situations. It ends in the epiphanic way that life will be be better if we actively do something about it which is a great way to end.

For lots of laughs, lots of double entendres and a perfect soundtrack for any camp holiday, Alright Bitches! is the perfect play to see to beat those winter blues. It gets your pumped up for that summer holiday and not so ironically, I’ve already booked the holiday to Gran Canaria. Viva la fiesta!
